Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky seems to have left a White House meeting empty-handed after failing to obtain the long-desired Tomahawk cruise missiles from US President Donald Trump.

The Ukrainian president remarked after the cordial bilateral that both leaders had discussed long-range missiles, but chose to avoid public declarations on that matter "since the US administration does not want an escalation."

President Trump's Stance on Weapons Transfer

Although Trump did not rule out providing Tomahawks to Ukraine, his tone during the Washington meeting was non-committal.

"With hope Ukraine won't require them, ideally we'll be able to end the conflict without considering Tomahawks," Trump stated, noting that America required the missile systems for its own security.

Trump acknowledged that providing the missiles would be "a significant escalation, but we'll be talking about it."

International Political Developments

This high-level meeting occurred just a day after President Trump spoke by phone with Russian President Vladimir Putin and arranged to hold face-to-face talks in Budapest in the near future.

After the meeting, Trump took to his social media platform to call for Kyiv and Moscow to "stop where they are" and end the war.

Ukrainian Perspective and Suggestions

President Zelensky proposed that his country could provide unmanned aerial vehicles in exchange for the Tomahawks, a proposal that elicited smiles and nodding from the American president.

The Ukrainian president also praised his counterpart on his role in securing a peace deal in the region, suggesting that the American president could build on that momentum to help end Russia's war in his country.

Upcoming Talks and Concerns

When asked about whether the possibility of Ukrainian forces obtaining the advanced missiles had influenced the Russian president to meet the US leader, the Ukrainian president answered, "I don't know," adding that the idea had made Russia to be "afraid since it is a strong weapon."

Asked if he was leaving the US capital more optimistic that Ukraine would get the missiles, he said, "I am realistic."

The Ukrainian leader believes that using Tomahawks to target Moscow's energy infrastructure would significantly damage Putin's war economy.

Human Consequences of the Conflict

"Truth and democracy will prevail, and all the violence and aggression will vanish," stated one Ukrainian store owner. "We just want to live, we refuse to surrender, we just want them to leave us alone."

This heartfelt reaction emerged as residents in Kyiv continue to rebuild their communities and enterprises damaged by recent missile attacks.

Ongoing Peace Process

Recently, the US president had shown an openness to the concept of selling the missile systems, even as Putin warned that such a decision would additional pressure the US-Russian relationship.

President Trump had hoped that a face-to-face summit in the US state in August would help convince the Russian president to begin substantial negotiations to end the war, but that summit did not achieve a significant progress.
